From promoting the global application of electricity-free cooling to engaging in public welfare and climate education, Prof. Martin Zhu remains at the forefront of practical action, contributing continuously to social advancement.

A Promoter: Leading Community Cooling Initiatives

i2Cool has partnered with foundations and community organizations to launch multiple public welfare cooling initiatives in various cities, focusing on vulnerable groups often overlooked during extreme heat, providing free electricity-free cooling technology and products to old residential areas, elderly nursing homes, and schools, to alleviate severe heat and enhance comfort to the greatest extent possible. These community cooling initiatives have been implemented in eight major cities both in China and abroad. To date, the projects have covered nearly 7,000 square meters, bringing long-lasting cooling support to tens of thousands of residents, enhancing climate resilience at the community level and advancing i2Cool’s ongoing exploration in ESG practices.

An Inspirer: Igniting Youthful Imagination for a Greener Future

Supporting youth means more than understanding their needs. It requires creating space for exploration and innovation. Prof. Martin Zhu believes that the seeds of green innovation should be planted early. He believes young people possess both imagination and the ability to act, and as long as they are given the right environment to thrive, endless possibilities can emerge. He encourages young people to engage in sustainable tech practices by organizing environmental education activities in collaboration with universities and communities. By offering students the necessary tools and knowledge, these programs help them understand climate change through hands-on experience, build problem-solving skills, and foster a proactive mindset.

An Educator: Bringing Climate Literacy into Schools

Understanding climate change may not be something a single lesson can explain fully. But starting from familiar surroundings, such as rooftop temperatures, summer air, and the urban heat island effect, that might help students naturally engage with the issue. Professor Zhu and his team have brought climate education to Lions Clubs International Tseung Chui King College and The Church of Christ in China Heep Woh Primary School in Hong Kong, Zhuangzi Primary School in Xinjiang, and Chinese High School, Batu Pahat in Malaysia. With simple and engaging language, he explains carbon emissions, energy consumption, urban climate issues, and how electricity-free cooling technology can improve daily life. Climate education is not just about teaching terms—it’s about inspiring students to reflect on their relationship with the environment.

A New Role: Continuing to Build Stronger Communities

The District Youth Community Building Committee, established by the Home Affairs Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, aims to involve more young people (aged 16–35) in local affairs. The committee discusses community development, youth growth, and civic education, while strengthening communication between the government and young citizens. Professor Zhu’s appointment reflects his sustained contributions to science, public service, education, and community work. In this new role, he will continue to bring his focus on youth development and insights into community building into practical projects. As i2Cool’s Co-Founder and CEO, he remains committed to leading the team in advancing sustainable technology, climate education, and community initiatives for a greener, more resilient future.
